The penultimate episode of Westworld The fourth season was a out of natureA chock full of high stakes, horrific destinies, and the level of the man in black A brutality we haven’t seen since season two.
The episode “Metatonia” (which can actually mean “change of heart”) begins with Bernard and Maeve’s arrival at Hoover Dam. (We haven’t seen the iconic Hulk since the season premiere and are starting to wonder if it will ever play this season.) Bernard explains that because the facility could “accommodate the infinite,” Dolores needed it (and now Hill owns it). More specifically, the Big Data Vault is a door to Sublime. He says that Hill can’t open the door without the key, which he confirms right away for him. Spinning a pivot, Bernard asks Maeve if Sherry is still her favorite drink. You resist at first before realizing that Bernard knows this isn’t their only chance to unlock Sublime.
Bernard told her he was tired. He regrets the horrific outcome that awaits them, frustrated that he can’t seem to change it. He told her that they could escape to transcendence, and that the extinction of families and humans alike should not involve them. Maeve, who is suddenly hoping, realizes what this means to her and asks him to do it. Bernard refuses and tells her that it is important to stay and fight. A massive mechanical arm smashes through the high-end windows around them and reduces the scene to Bernard sitting with Akecha.
“Do you now understand where all this is heading?” Akecha asks. Bernard says he does and that he sees where it all ends.
No time wasted on the Bernard/Maeve front, “Metatonya” quickly reveals what’s really going on – and where they really are. They themselves are in Sublime, watching different scores play before a formidable machine attacks and kills them. Next time, Maeve kills the attacking machine, after which Bernard tells her that they must get to Hale’s Tower if they want to save the world. Maeve joins him on one condition: that he reunite her with her daughter when it’s all over.
Meanwhile, Christina wakes up with Teddy sitting at the foot of her bed. She expresses confusion and remorse, unable to understand why he created such a hellish existence for so many people. Teddy explains that she has many sides and Hill is one of them. Christina leaves the room and tries to drown herself in her bathtub. Not only did she die, but she came out of the water … Different.
Back in Caleb prison, Hill and William look back on their dirty science experiment with amusement. Hill then told Caleb that she was shutting down towns and putting people “in cold storage.” She has put her entire evil plan on the table: use it to lure the rebels out there so you can eliminate them all at once. William listens nearby, visibly annoyed….
Things escalate quickly from there. Frankie, Stubbs, and the surviving rebels meet Bernard and Maeve near New York City. Bernard says goodbye to Stubbs, who claims he will not survive the upcoming battle. Stubbs hugs him and asks him to win.
Hill sends the world a coded message explaining that she and her people are leaving humans behind. (“evolve,” as she calls it.) Meanwhile, William’s version revisits the original again. Host-William asks OG William what he would do. William simply repeats the question on his transcript, telling him that it doesn’t matter which of them defeats Hill, because they are the same. William’s copy then stabs the original imprisoned in the box and leaves. We’d say OG William is dead (because for sure look dead) but we know better than to put too much faith in any of them WestworldRelevant observation or theory.
Christina asks Teddy how Dolores was, and he tells her that while Dolores was cute, she can also be cruel. The world was hard on her and the stories she gave to others transcended. Together, Teddy and Christina storm the Entertainment Olympics. By “storm” we mean that Christina politely orders the employee to pull the fire alarm. Then I ordered everyone in the building, except for the book, to vacate the building. She has the writers destroy their stories, and then you drop to a lower level at the Olympiad. There, she discovers Caleb and releases him.
Frankie and Stubbs also infiltrate the Olympics and discover William’s human body (?). Frankie insists they try to help him, but Stubbs, acknowledging William, says whoever did it was doing them a favor. Moments later, Caleb attacked both of them and tucked Frankie into his glass cell. She tells him who she is, which angers him even more. She quickly remembers the moments that were the only ones she could tell, and Caleb, crying, realizes who she is.
Meanwhile, Maeve and Bernard approach the tower. On the way, Bernard reveals that there is no way to win but he needs her help anyway. She skips over him, her expression illegible.
Let’s start this next part by saying that the next few minutes of Westworld Consider some of the best and most interesting moments of the series. Ready, go… go!
Maeve encounters a mid-Hale bypass, resulting in a cruel Fighting, one smashes them out the window and continues to the water feature outside the arena. Before either of them can deliver the final blow, William appears out of nowhere to shoot Maeve in the head, before also killing Hill. Leaves their bodies in the ponds surrounding the tower.
Then William Bernard, who was recording on his tablet what appeared to be instructions, objected. William shoots him too. With Bernard bleeding out, scenes from his conversation with Akecha reveal that he never expected to survive the war. (“There is no scenario in which I survive.”) William shoots him Third time, after which Bernard seems to fade into the sublime. William then uses the tower’s control to overcome Christina’s influence and force everyone in the city to kill each other. This means that every major character is now in immediate danger.
While Caleb, Frankie, and Stubbs try to escape, a mobster shoots Frankie, not fatal. All three get away, but hardly. In another part of town, Teddy explains to a confused and desperate Cristina that people can’t see her because…she’s not real. Dun Don Dunn!
“Metatonia” ends with William’s triumphant version wearing his signature outfit as he wanders away from the tower as it explodes.
What will happen next is really anyone’s guess. But that’s what the comments section is! Share your reactions to “MetaTunia” and your predictions for the upcoming weekend!
