In a statement, the department said the action is being taken concurrently with a civil action that controls 66 internet domains used by the same actors.
According to the United States, the Russian government carried out the scheme to steal classified information from Americans, using ostensibly legitimate email accounts to reveal victims’ passwords.
The domains in question were used by hackers from the “Calisto Group,” an operational unit within Center 18 of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), or representatives working for the group.
Hackers from the “Kalisto Group” used the domains in question in a persistent and sophisticated ‘phishing’ campaign, with the aim of gaining unauthorized access and stealing valuable information from the computers and email accounts of the United States government and other victims.
According to published reports, they targeted US-based companies, former employees of the Secret Service, former and current employees of the Department of Defense and State Department, and employees of the Department of Energy.
