UNLV mourns the sudden loss of a football student athlete

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – The UNLV morning community is mourning the loss of Ryan Keeler, the student athlete who passed away in Las Vegas on Monday.

“We are devastated by the loss of a member of our rebellious family,” said UNLV first-year head football coach Barry Odom. “While I only had the privilege of knowing Ryan for a couple of months, he really stood out to our coaching staff as a wonderful person, student and teammate. Our condolences and prayers go out to Ryan’s family as we grieve with them on this terrible loss.”

Keeler, 20, was a defensive lineman for the UNLV Rebel football team. He was a highly sought after player who transferred to UNLV from Rutgers University. Keeler was an All-Mountain West academic honoree and had dozens of scholarship offers out of high school.

“The UNLV family is in mourning today for the sudden loss of a loved one,” said UNLV Director of Athletics Eric Harper. “Our thoughts are with all of Ryan’s family and friends along with his Rebel team mates.”

“It’s hard for words to come by this evening as we mourn the sudden and tragic loss of UNLV student-athlete Ryan Keeler,” said UNLV President Keith E. Whitfield. “My condolences are with Ryan’s family, friends, loved ones and teammates during this very difficult time.”
