The Seattle Mariners They agreed to trade outfielder Kyle Lewis to Arizona Diamondbacks For catcher/outfielder Cooper Hummel, the teams announced Thursday. It’s a straightforward, one-for-one trade-off that many will refer to as a tough trade.
Lewis, 27, was the Mariners’ first-round pick in 2016 (11th overall) and debuted in 2019 with just 75 appearances, then won Player of the Year in 2020 and even earned on a small number of ballots. He has only managed 54 games in the past two seasons, due to injury issues (concussions and multiple knee injuries).
In 130 career games, Lewis hit .244/.329/.432 (112 runs per second+) with 12 doubles, 25 homers, 57 RBI, 68 runs, seven steals, and a 2.4 RBI. He mostly plays in the middle of the field, but he can tackle right or left as well. It’s worth noting that the D-Backs lineup was pretty heavy on the left hand and Lewis was swinging right hand, so he’d help balance things out a bit.
There’s still plenty of the offseason left, but for the time being, the Diamondbacks have used either Lewis or Daulton Varsho at quarterback with Jake McCarthy in right field and Corbin Carroll in left. Varshaw is also a part-time catcher, spelled Carson Kelly when he wants D-Backs.
Like Varsho, Hummel is also a catcher who can play outfield. The 27-year-old switch hitter made 201 plate appearances last season, slashing .176/.274/.307 (66 OPS+) with eight doubles, three triples, three home runs, 17 RBI, 20 runs and four bases Stolen and – 0.3 war.
The Mariners will likely trade Jesse Winker this season, but they still have it Newly acquired Teoscar HernandezAnd Julio Rodriguez and Jared Kilinc are on the court now with Cal Raleigh behind the plate. They will also likely look to add a cornerback, whether it be to bring back Mitch Hanegger or an exit from the organization. Hamill is just a depth list.
