Until about six months ago, I had no interest in Wordle. As a writer for one of the most respected publishing organizations in the English-speaking world (brag!), I was like: I already know many, many words. I don’t need to play with it. Once, I went to South Africa on a journalistic trip, and after introducing myself as an employee of the New York Times, my new friend said, “Ah, yes, the people of Wardle,” as if we didn’t have 132 Pulitzer Prizes?

That all changed when I realized Wordle didn’t have to be a game. With the right group text, it can be competitive. My Wordle group chat contains as many taunts and curses as there are green, yellow and black squares. (GUANO had a crazy day chatting.) I don’t actually know these guys – I was added on a whim after a chat about other games – which makes it even more fun. Most of the members don’t even have names on my phone. All I know, every time I open up the chat, is that someone with a New Jersey area code got the word of the day in three tries, or that a record producer, disc jockey, filmmaker, musician, journalist, and actor hated it when they needed four courses to solve it, Or have someone be at Disneyland with their kids and talk about it for a while.

I start my day with Wordle, because it’s the perfect wake-up call: training your mind while your body is still warm and surrounded by pillows. Some people in group chats check other people’s messages before playing, looking for clues, which is a skill I only understand in theory. I have no starting strategies or words: I just write down whatever comes to mind, or I let my fingers decide. It’s never elegant, but I rarely go nuts.

Four stars, because this was the first time in decades that I’d thought to myself, “I’m before E, except after C,” and it was nice to bring some poetry into my day.

Word of the day is thief: whoever steals something, According to Webster’s New World Dictionary.

this word It’s moderately challenging because of the uncertainty, but strategy can help.

The word has a common letter pattern with five or six possible answers. Getting the answer in six guesses requires strategic choices in each guess.
