The Portuguese embassy in Moscow has asked the Portuguese public to remain vigilant after an attack alert

The Portuguese embassy in Moscow on Friday urged Portuguese citizens in the country to avoid “places of high population concentration” following warnings by several Western countries of possible terrorist attacks in Russia.

“Following the information about the recent neutralization of an attempted terrorist attack in Moscow, the Embassy of Portugal in the Russian Federation calls on Portuguese citizens to be extra cautious, reiterating the recommendations on this page to avoid crowded places”, read a note published on the Portal Communities.

In an update published today on the portal of the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The Portuguese embassy in Moscow recalled that “the recommendation that Portuguese citizens should not travel to the Russian Federation remains valid.”

Embassies of several European countries have warned today that terrorist attacks may occur in Russia in the coming days, following warnings from countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom.

In a message published on its portal, the US embassy initially indicated that extremist groups “have immediate plans to attack” large crowds in Russia and asked its citizens to avoid crowded places.

The British Embassy also posted a statement online, promising to monitor the situation.

Subsequently, other embassies, such as those of Germany, the Netherlands and Latvia, asked their citizens to take extra security measures given the risk of attacks.

Embassy officials did not provide any other information about the possible attacks.

A number of events took place without incident this Friday to mark Women's Day, a public holiday in Russia.

So far, local authorities have not commented on information about potential attacks released by embassies.
