A man paralyzed in a shootout with police after shooting former colleagues in Spain has been euthanized in prison ahead of his trial.
Marin Eugen Sabau, 46, wounded three former colleagues and a police officer in the northeastern Spanish city of Tarragona last December. Sabau, a native of Romania, attacked the security services company he worked for. He fled the scene and barricaded himself in a house with an arsenal of weapons. After shooting a police officer, security forces shot him several times, the Observer reports.

The firing led to amputation of one of the shooter’s legs. The injuries left him in chronic pain, and the courts concluded that he met the requirements to apply for an assisted death. The request was made after spending six months in a hospital bed at the prison’s infirmary.
The victims objected to this demand
The request drew a strong response from victims, who argued that Sabah should be brought to justice for the shooting. However, the court in Tarkona, considering the circumstances, ruled that it was a fundamental right of the Sabah to seek euthanasia and that, under the law, the judiciary had no right to interfere.
“It’s not about preventing euthanasia, but we wanted the victims to have a fair trial,” the injured policeman’s lawyer, Jose Natonio Pitos, told Spanish newspaper El Pais.
According to Spanish news agency EFE, prison officials confirmed Saba’s death on Tuesday. According to health sources, the man donated his organs and said goodbye.
The shooter was the first undertrial to be euthanized in a serious criminal case, such as attempted murder.
Spain A law was passed last year that says adults with serious, incurable illnesses that cause “unbearable suffering” can choose euthanasia. The Act came into effect on June 25, 2021 About 180 people exercised their right to assisted dying. Prior to that, euthanasia was punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
