Sherica Jackson and Noah Lyles break world records in the men’s and women’s 200 meters

First, Shericka Jackson set a new national and championship record after defeating Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce for gold.

The Jamaican dominated the race and won in a time of 21.45 seconds – becoming the second fastest woman ever, behind American Florence Griffith Joyner.

He followed soon after, with Noah Lyles retaining his men’s title and breaking the American record previously set by Michael Johnson 26 years earlier.

Lyles is now the third fastest man at distance after clocking in at 19.31 seconds.

“Today is my day,” Lyles said after the race. “I felt like I had the best start I could ask for.”

He was joined on the podium by two American teammates – Kenny Bednarek in second and teenage Irion Knighton in third – as the United States became the first country to complete a clean sweep of world championships medals in both the men’s 100m and 200m.

“It feels great to be on the podium with two American citizens,” Lyles added.

While not completing her full sweep in the women’s race, Jamaica completed a 1-2 with Jackson and Fraser-Price ahead of Britain’s Dina Asher Smith in third.

Johnson, who witnessed his record defeat to Lyles, was working as a women’s race analyst and said the quality was “the best we’ve ever seen”.

“I feel great. World Champion Jackson said. Fastest woman alive, national record and championship, I can’t complain.”
