Russia suspended gas supplies to Italy scheduled for Saturday

Russian company Gazprom has suspended a gas supply to Eni scheduled for this Saturday, the Italian company said, as it was impossible to transport it through Austria.

“Gazprom has informed us that it cannot confirm the delivery of the blocks requested today, citing the impossibility of transporting gas through Austria,” Eni said in a statement.

As a result, “Russian gas flows to me through the Tarvisio entry point,” the Italian giant added, as quoted by French news agency AFP.

Most of the Russian gas supplied to Italy passes through Ukraine via the TAG pipeline, which reaches Tarvisio in the north of the country, on the border with Austria.

According to an Eni spokesperson quoted by the Italian news agency AGI, Gazprom says it cannot comply with the rules required to obtain a gas supply service in Austria.

“We are working with Gazprom to check if we can resume flows to Italy,” the spokesman said.

Russian gas exports to Europe have been steadily declining since the start of sanctions imposed on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine on February 24 this year.

Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Eni announced in early March that it would sell its 50% stake in the Blue Stream gas pipeline, which it controls to Russian giant Gazprom.
