Two Ukrainian journalists are being targeted for the same type of action
Russian FSB security services have opened a criminal case against a CNN journalist who allegedly crossed the border illegally into Russia to film a report in the Kursk region.
According to Russian agency Interfax, the journalist in question is Nick Patton Walsh, British and CNN’s chief international security correspondent.
Interfax reported that the FSB opened similar cases against two Ukrainian journalists, Diana Butsko and Olesya Borovych. The reason is the same: “crossing the border illegally”.
According to the Russian agency, Moscow will soon issue an international arrest warrant related to these cases. Those found guilty of crossing the border illegally face a maximum sentence of five years in prison.
The journalist wrote the reports in Chutsha, a Russian city in the Kursk region, 10 kilometers from the border with Ukraine.
In a report prompting Russian security services to act against a CNN journalist, the British reporter can be seen detailing the entry of Ukrainian troops into Russian territory. “It’s surreal to be back in Russia led by Ukrainian troops,” he said.
Ukrainian forces attacked the Kursk region on August 6, taking a new turn in the war and taking Putin’s army by surprise. In the latest update on the situation from President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday night, Kiev currently controls 93 seats in the Kursk region. At the same time, the Russian president has pledged to “withdraw” Ukrainian forces and the Kremlin has already ordered the construction of concrete shelters in Ukrainian-controlled territory.
