Russia handed over 45 Ukrainian soldiers detained in the Battle of Azovstal.

“HToday, our team was able to retrieve 45 of our soldiers from Russian prison. 42 male defenders and three female defenders from Ukraine. All defended Azovstal. National Guards. 35 privates and sergeants, 10 officers”, Zelensky, in his usual nightly speech, “thanked” the group involved in the prisoner exchange.

Today, three pilots of the Russian Aerospace Forces detained in Ukraine were returned to Russia, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.

“As a result of a complex negotiation process, three Russian soldiers, pilots of the Russian Aerospace Forces, who were in danger of their lives in captivity, were returned from the territory controlled by the Kyiv regime,” the ministry pointed out.

In the spring of 2022, Mariupol was destroyed during a siege by the Russian military against Ukrainian soldiers entrenched for weeks in the massive Azovstal industrial complex.

The strategic port of Mariupol was captured by Russian forces in May after a more than two-month siege that destroyed many apartment buildings, schools and shops and devastated much of the city.

The military offensive launched by Russia in Ukraine on February 24, 2022 has so far displaced more than 14.6 million people – 6.5 million internally displaced and more than 8.1 million to European countries – according to the latest UN data. The refugee crisis ranks as the worst in Europe since World War II (1939-1945).

At least 18 million Ukrainians are in need of humanitarian assistance and 9.3 million are in need of food aid and housing.

The Russian invasion – justified by Putin as the need to “denazify” and militarize Ukraine for Russia’s security – was generally condemned by the international community, which responded by sending arms to Ukraine and imposing diplomatic and political sanctions on Russia.

The UN confirmed 8,709 dead civilians and 14,666 wounded since the start of the war, underscoring that these numbers are far from the real numbers.
