PSA: Your copy of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor may need a large download for one day

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is having a bumpy day with an update situation that could mean users have to download a huge patch whether you’re on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, or PC.

EA announced on Twitter (below) that it has released a day patch for Survivor that addresses some performance issues, but some PC players are reporting massive file sizes. until some guys Those who pre-loaded the game on Steam reported that the launch day update took it to 128GB.

EA also released patches throughout the week prior to launch, which means that depending on when users preloaded, there might be some missed updates. IGN’s Day 1 update on PC came in at 46.5GB, for example, and while that’s a lot less than what some PC users will experience, it’s still a huge plus for those looking to enjoy the game on launch day.

Those who pre-loaded the game on PS5 and Xbox Series should enjoy a smoother experience, as the first day patches here are only a few GB each (although there may also be a mid-week patch to download as well that adds a few GB).

Purchasing Survivor on disc is a whole different story, however, as a large download is required before users can start playing the game. This is because the file sizes of the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of Survivor exceed the 100GB that can be stored on Blu-ray discs used for games.

The base PS5 install is 147.9GB while the Xbox Series X is 134GB, with the remaining data added to the game via a separate download. Essentially, it’s the same as when Red Dead Redemption 2 or Grand Theft Auto 5 came with an installation disc and boot disc, except that the install disc is now downloading. This also means that despite being only a single player game, Survivor cannot be played without an internet connection.

While this is announced on the front of the box in some areas (as is the tweet above), in others it is kept in lowercase. “Internet connection required to download mandatory content updates required to play the game” reads the terms and conditions on the back of the UK version. Mandatory content updates require an internet connection.

This is repeated in the game Official instructionsstates: “Players who have purchased a physical copy of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will be required to be online to install the Day 1 patch but may play offline thereafter.”

It’s unclear how big that download is for disc players, but based solely on calculations, the minimum will be 47.9GB on PS5 and 34GB on Xbox Series X. IGN knows it’s a big number, but EA declined to comment when asked about a specific number.

As indicated in the aforementioned EA tweet, these complex Day 1 updates won’t be the last batch of patches for Survivor. In the coming weeks we will be publishing patches that will: fix bugs and improve performance, [and] Add more accessibility features

However, you should go back to a familiar (and simple) process after it’s fully installed on day one. These patches should also be somewhat small on console, though PC might be a different story. The PC version of The Last of Us Part 1 just received its seventh update in a month, for example, which came in at a whopping 25GB.

Once Survivor is fully installed and players can finally start playing, they should be having a good time. IGN gave the game a 9/10 in our review, saying, “If Respawn makes a third game like Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Fallen Order that completes the best Star Wars trilogy in 30 years, stop it.”
