Alexei Likhachev, director of the Russian Atomic Energy Agency (Rosatom), spoke with IAEA director-general Rafael Croci, saying “the situation at the two plants continues to deteriorate.”
According to the Russian news agency Interfax, Ligachev invited Krosi to visit the Kursk nuclear power plant, located near the city of Kurchatov, to “personally assess the situation near the nuclear facilities.”
“The alarm siren at the Kursk nuclear power plant is activated ten to twelve times a day, and there have been 21 warnings in the last 24 hours,” Rosatom told the international organization responsible.
Over the Russian-controlled Ukrainian territory of Zaporizhia, Rosatom warned of “daily shelling” on the territory of the city of Energodar and other neighboring towns.
Moscow also warned that Ukrainian forces were preparing for “provocation” at both nuclear power plants.
According to Alexei Likhachev, “the number of messages and signals about the preparation of this provocation has increased several times over the past 24 hours.”
“These actions not only pose a direct threat to the two nuclear power plants, but also affect Europe’s nuclear security,” he said.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has called on international organizations to condemn Ukrainian “provocations” against the Kursk plant.
“According to available information, the Kiev regime has launched an attack on the Kursk nuclear power plant,” said ministry spokeswoman Maria Szaharova.
Russia specifically called on the UN and the IAEA to “prevent the breach of nuclear and physical security of the Kursk nuclear power plant, which could cause a large-scale catastrophe in Europe, and to condemn the provocative actions being prepared by the Kiev regime.” .
Maria Szaharova argued that “attempts to threaten and intimidate entire regions and the international community must be decisively stopped with joint efforts.”
The Kursk plant has four reactors, while the Zaporizhia plant, considered the largest in Europe, has six reactors, although it has not produced electricity since September 2022.
