Foden, who was sidelined earlier this season with a nagging foot injury, put City ahead in the 15th minute with his fourth goal in three matches in all competitions.

The midfielder showed remarkable control, weaving through four Newcastle defenders into the box before his angled shot caught sight of the outstretched feet of Sven Putman and goalkeeper Nick Pope.

Silva came off the bench in the 65th minute and the Portugal international scored two minutes later with a powerful shot past Pop after a shot from Erling Haaland.

It was another blow to Newcastle’s hopes of finishing in the top four with coach Eddie Howe’s team, who lost 2-0 to Manchester United in the League Cup final last week, after winning their last eight league matches.
