“Today I spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who congratulated me on the election victory, a good government and wanted to strengthen the relationship between our countries,” wrote the future Brazilian ruler on the social network Twitter.
“Brazil is back, seeking dialogue with all and committed to seeking a world without hunger and peace,” he added.
On the other hand, the Kremlin said in an official statement that “in a telephone conversation with the President-elect of the Federal Republic of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Putin congratulated him on his victory in the elections (…) he succeeded in his state work.”
The note added that both sides are confident that the strategic cooperation between Brazil and Russia, which is a member of the BRICS grouping along with India, China and South Africa, will continue to strengthen in many areas.
Putin and Lula da Silva also hoped to consolidate relations within the framework of BRICS and participation in international organizations.
The Brazilian progressive leader won the presidential election in October against incumbent President Jair Bolsonaro after receiving more than half of the votes in the second round.
Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s inauguration is scheduled for January 1, 2023.
