The Belarusian leader has positioned himself as one of Putin’s key supporters since the Russian president ordered a large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, called the launch Peace talks between Ukraine and Russia. Speaking to Russian news agency TASS, the head of state says only “high-ranking American officials” want the war to continue.
According to the Belarusian president, Western countries, especially the “senior leaders” of the United States, are encouraging Kiev to resist because Ukraine and Russia want to “destroy each other,” Reuters reported, citing excerpts of a nearly two-hour interview. Published Thursday on the website of the President of Belarus.
Lukashenko, without providing evidence, accused Kiev of wanting to attack Belarus and said Minsk would not allow Ukrainian troops to “trample” his country.
In the same interview, the Belarusian president called for dialogue between the two countries to end the conflict:
“Let’s sit down at the negotiating table and end this war. The Ukrainian people, the Russians, and the Belarusians don’t need it. [o Ocidente] That’s what they need.”
