LIRR adds more shuttle trains to Brooklyn after a chaotic first week with Grand Central Madison service

New York – The Long Island Rail Road is increasing rush hour service to Brooklyn, extending trains serving Penn Station and adding cars to all trains that were overloaded last week.

It is also promising to improve customer service at Jamaica Station.

With its peak on Monday night, CBS 2 has seen a rush to get trains on journeys that some say are longer and busier.

It was another day, another round of LIRR changes.

“The situation is not getting better,” said contestant Kami Oipshalom.

Three shuttle trains were brought into service after days of chaos and restricted tracks, caused by schedule changes and the new Grand Central Madison station.

“You miss a shuttle, it’s another 20 minutes you have to wait,” said Julia Sacca of Wantagh.

“It’s just a heavy back-and-forth every day,” added Heinz Harris of Baldwin.

While some told CBS2 they see improvements in the service, others described Monday as more of a mess.

“You have to fix this situation. People need to go to work,” said Laura Gorman of Northport.

Frustrated commuters have been on social media sharing videos of train cars with no available seats and overcrowded platforms.

MTA added cars. Trains with eight now have 10. Trains with 10 get 12, and so on, increasing the odds of getting seats.

Some riders said they were forced to change stops and commute times.

One woman said, “I have to get up early and work later.”

“We’re all angry. The community is angry,” said Oyster Pie supervisor Joe Saladino, as he led a rally to demand better service. “Communities on the Oyster Bay Line are already facing limited service on the Long Island Railroad because of its miles of electric track. Schedule changes make an existing problem worse.”

MTA customer service workers can be seen on platforms answering questions, but what travelers are asking for are drop-off tables with more direct service from point A to point B, without the detours.
