Well, the good news and the bad news. The good news is that you can pre-load Destiny 2’s Lightfall expansion a day early, as it was released by accident in some regions. The bad news is…that this will completely negate your ability to play the game until Lightfall actually launches.
While you’ll be treated to the new Lightfall title screen and music track that will greet you for the rest of the year, this everyone you can do. This preload wasn’t supposed to start until the planned 24-hour downtime tomorrow morning, when you wouldn’t be able to play anyway. So you can’t play the game if you download this until Lightfall launches at 12pm ET on Tuesday, eliminating your ability to do any last-minute farming or prep work.
This seems to affect the PS5 more than most other platforms. I’m in the US, and although my Steam version of the game hasn’t been updated, I actually have a 92GB (!) update posted directly to my PlayStation. I haven’t even bought Lightfall there yet (my code from Bungie is on Steam), but since all players have access to Neomuna as at least a space league, the game effectively downloads Lightfall for everyone.
bungee tell people to pause the download if they see it to continue playing the game normally. But on PS5, you have to go through a bunch of steps to keep playing because of how the library system works. requires a Complete reinstallation From the game, many players may not be bothered. Here are these steps:
- Uninstall the game
- Go to “Game Library”
- select “your group”
- Select the Destiny 2 icon
- Select the PS5 version
- On the D2 Store page, select Download to reinstall D2
At this point I said “screw it up” as I let the Lightfall download happen, because I think I’m done with my preparatory work. In addition, I am sure that even if I do this download on PS5, I can still play the current version of the game on Steam without being banned. But if the only platform of your choice downloads this huge update, you’re out of luck, so be careful.
I have no idea how this happened, but I think everyone is hoping no more technical glitches happen to launch Lightfall itself. The Witch Queen launched very smoothly, and I think everyone is hoping to see a repeat of that here. But we’re definitely off to a rocky start with everything that’s going on here.
