Will Smith’s moment slapping Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars
It’s been nearly two weeks since Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the 2022 Academy Awards.
The Academy met yesterday (April 8) to decide on the “consequences” Smith would face for the accident, in which the actor hit Rock on stage and swore at him after the comedian made fun of his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
“Jada, I love you. Ji Jin 2I can’t wait to see you,” Rock joked, referring to Pinkett Smith’s shaved head. Pinkett Smith reported last year that she shaved her head after suffering from hair loss.
Smith, who later won Best Actor at the ceremony, walked onto the stage and hit Rock, before yelling at him, “Keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth.”
In a statement issued after the incident, the academy “condemns” Smith’s actions, and said an investigation is being opened into possible penalties.
“The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith on last night’s show,” the organization said. “We have officially begun a formal review of the incident and will explore further actions and consequences in accordance with our internal regulations, standards of conduct and California law.”
Smith later quit the Academy, but some have speculated that he could be stripped of the Best Actor award – which he won during this year’s gala, for his role in the biopic tennis King Richard.

I don’t think that’s terribly unusual for high-profile stand-ins touring new material – especially when there’s as much media frenzy as there is in Rock now.
