German tourist dies in Atlantic shark attack

UA German tourist died Monday after being attacked by a shark 500 kilometers off the coast of Spain’s Canary Islands.

The victim, 30 years old and about 450 kilometers southwest of the island of Gran Canaria, was bitten by a shark while sailing on the British catamaran ‘Talion’s Chichester’ on Monday afternoon, according to AFP, citing maritime rescue services.

The attack took place in the Atlantic Ocean, 278 miles off the coast of Africa, 450 kilometers southwest of the island of Gran Canaria and the woman lost a leg when a shark attacked her.

At 2:55 pm (local time), the Spanish rescue services were informed that a “medical evacuation” was necessary, and after contacting the Moroccan rescue services, they decided to send a Spanish military helicopter and plane to assist the catamaran crew.

The victim boarded a helicopter around 8pm but died en route to a hospital in Las Palmas.
