A Massachusetts mother and child are fleeing military conflict in Sudan, family says
An Ashland native and her 18-month-old daughter, who were trapped in Sudan as the military conflict there worsened, crossed the border and left the country, according to her family. Trillian Clifford, from Ashland, moved to Sudan less than a year ago with her daughter Alma to teach at a school in the capital, Khartoum. Clifford has spent the past 10 years teaching abroad, with stints in Cairo, Egypt and Mumbai, India, before moving to Khartoum. “She really loves the idea of getting out and teaching where there is a real need,” Clifford’s sister-in-law, Tim Winter, said she had taught in Massachusetts before moving abroad—and that part of her decision to go was rooted in financial scarcity. It will be several days before Clifford and her daughter reach American soil.

“She really likes the idea of going out and teaching where there is a real need,” said Rebecca Winter, Clifford’s sister-in-law.
Clifford’s brother, Tim Winter, said she studied at Massachusetts before going abroad — part of her decision to do so was due to financial scarcity.
It would be several days before Clifford and her daughter reached American soil.
