Chappelle devoted much of his 15-minute monologue making fun of Kanye West and Keri Irving for their recent anti-Semitic remarks. He began mocking PR mistakes, stating that Kanye should have apologized for “buying some time” and joking that the rapper was so anti-Semitic that Irving got into trouble over the engagement.
The comedian then proceeded to explain why he saw anti-Semitism, particularly the idea that the Jewish people collectively run the world, as a flawed ideology. Use examples of anti-black racism in different parts of America as evidence that having a large number of people of a particular race in a particular area does not necessarily imply authority.
“I’ve been to Hollywood and this is exactly what I saw: They’re a lot of Jews, like a lot,” he said. “But it doesn’t mean anything. There are a lot of blacks in Ferguson, Missouri, but that doesn’t mean we run the place.”
The monologue began attracting some criticism on social media on Sunday, with some Jewish leaders and commentators slamming Chappelle for highlighting a dangerous topic. Some felt that explaining a racist ideology, even in a comic way intended to debunk its falsity, normalizes an unnecessarily toxic way of thinking.
Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, took to Twitter to condemn Chappelle’s comments. His organization had previously issued official statements condemning West and Irving’s comments, and he used his own platform to express his regret for Chappelle making jokes about anti-Semitism.
