FRESCO — Dennis Houston’s sudden rise to the Dallas Cowboys depth chart and onto the 53-man roster — a rise that saw the Texan progress from being an unpolished free agent to an NFL player who earned the trust of QB Dak Prescott — ended, on Least so far.
Houston was laid off Tuesday as part of a roster change as Dallas prepares to play the third week of the New York Giants, with less need for his presence. As Michael Gallup makes his comeback from off-season knee surgery.
But … there is a “but”
Houston totaled only three catches for 53 yards in three pre-season games, and two catches for 16 yards in his regular time. But he quickly picked up what Dallas was trying to do in attack and developed a noteworthy relationship with Cowboys quarterback Prescott.
“When you break the rush, he lines up in the right place, no matter what position he’s in. It’s where I expect him to be in every game,” Prescott said at training camp.
“He is just a strong man, very resilient.”

That quality will pay off in Houston’s 6-1, 200-pound where it has gone unclaimed, as expected, and He will now bounce back to the Cowboys as a member of the coaching squad.
Houston was part of a broad reception group led by CeeDee Lamb, With Noah Brown as a possible starter in these first two matches, and with the advent of Gallup. Rookie Jalen Tolbert (maybe ready to be active for the first time), KaVontae Turpin and Simi Fehoko are keeping their jobs this week as other members of the vast group here at The Star.
And now Dennis Houston has a job, too.
