The second edition of the college football rankings was released Tuesday night, with national champion Georgia clinching the top spot after a decisive victory over formerly seeded Tennessee last Saturday. For a dominant start to the 2022 season, the Bulldogs only allow 10.8 points per game with double-digit wins in eight of their nine contests.

However, all is not lost on volunteers. Sliding into fifth, Tennessee still has a chance to move up the four-team field given the strength of its wins up to this point along with having the best loss in the country. Reminder: All but one of the teams ranked first in the season’s preliminary CFP rankings that eventually made it to the playoff (Mississippi State, 2014).

The unbeaten teams eliminate the top four with Ohio State, Michigan and California State University in the next three places in order. However, even if the Buckeyes and Wolverines make it through the next two weeks unscathed, one of them undefeated will fall on November 26 when the Big Ten rivals meet. The Horned Frogs landed in the top four for the second time in the program’s history (2014).

Despite losing 46 points to top-ranked Georgia in the first week, Oregon edges out USC and UCLA as the top Pac-12 team as the league looks to join the CFP for the first time since 2016. LSU is notably the highest-ranked team with two losses at No. 7 The Bayou Bengals have an inside run against Dawgs in the SEC Championship game, and should LSU win, they’ll have the status of becoming the first team to lose twice to earn the CFP bid.

The playoffs of Alabama and Clemson are down significantly after losing both to LSU and Notre Dame last week. It’s the first time in the history of the CFP rankings that no software is among the six highest-rated teams in the top 25.

The Crimson Tide dropped three places to ninth, effectively taking them out of the playoff consideration with two losses, while the Tigers dropped six points to No. 10. Clemson, one loss, still has a chance to jump back into the four-team field. However, given a potential meeting with North Carolina at the ACC Championship game, it could provide a late boost in the ratings. But she may need some help getting there.
