Controlling a city or part of a territory is not always the primary military objective. In Pakmut, the struggle was political, but it was soon to be military, as heavy pressure was exerted in the east and north by mercenaries of Wagner’s group in early 2023. Instead of retreating or advancing against the current, Ukraine is holding the pike with heavy losses, aiming to inflict high numbers of casualties (estimated at 30,000) on the enemy with determination until early March. Since then the battle has lost its intensity due to mud, mud, loss, rain etc. Ukraine mainly responds, invites attack and occasionally attacks. The elevation of the terrain at Chasiv Yar allows for heavy rearguard support of heavy artillery with tanks and howitzer T-20 and T-30 artillery pieces. On the Russian side, the ammunition of the BM-21 Grad snipers seems to be infinite in its ratio.
Aside from other light armored vehicles for military and civilian withdrawals like the Rochelle Senator APC and M113 APC, you don’t see any Western weaponry on the ground. Defense Minister Helena Carreras announced that Portugal will take delivery of three more M577s and two more. The rest are Soviet material, in many cases at the range, alleging intensive use for more than a year. However, the most effective weapons are the Soviet MRLS rocket launchers Grad and Uragan models and tanks that can fire up to four kilometers and cause panic among troops. Therefore, each small group in the trenches always had a Stukna, a Javelin anti-tank missile or a grenade launcher, many of which were made in Sweden.
