Braves trade Jake Odorizzi, cash to Rangers for Kolby Allard (Updated)

The Atlanta Braves announced Wednesday night that they have secured left-footed Colby Allard of the Texas Rangers in exchange for Jake O’Dorrese and money. Odorizzi had a player option for 2023 and it appears he was planning to sign up.

The Braves originally drafted Allard with the 14th overall pick in the 2015 MLB Draft. He made his league debut with the club in 2018 and was traded to the Texans in 2019 on trade deadline loyalist Chris Martin. He appeared in only 10 matches with Rangers outside last season and was allowed 17 times in 21 rounds.

Atlanta have acquired Odorizzi from the Houston Astros in exchange for loyalist Will Smith on this season’s deadline. He started 10 times in the Braves and had a 5.24 ERA and 5.14 FIP at 46 13 roles.

The important part of this deal is the cash that goes with Odorizzi to Texas. Odorizzi had a $12.5 million player option for 2023 and it looks like he was about to sign up. He didn’t have much of a path to a meaningful role with the team for 2023 and chose to transfer and save a portion of that salary.

Modernization MLB.com’s Mark Finsand reports that Atlanta will send $10 million to Texas in the deal.
