Body of Iranian General Abbas Nilforoushan, killed by Israel, found

“The “The body of Martyr Abbas Nilforoushan has been found through continuous efforts,” Iran’s ideological wing, the Revolutionary Guards, said in a statement.

The Revolutionary Guard explained that the repatriation date and funeral arrangements would be announced later.

Abbas Nilforoushan, one of the top commanders of the Quds Force, an elite unit of the Revolutionary Guards, was killed along with Nasrallah on September 27 following an Israeli strike in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

On October 1, Iran fired about 200 missiles at Revolutionary Guard Israel in what it indicated was a reprisal move following the July assassinations of Nilforoshan, Nasrallah and Ismail Haniyeh, head of the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas.

Israel has promised to retaliate. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant promised the attack would be “deadly, precise and surprising”.

Israel has intensified its campaign against Hezbollah with several heavy airstrikes across Lebanon and a ground offensive across the border, following a year-long firefight between the two rivals.

Hezbollah has also expanded its firing of rockets into heavily populated areas of Israel’s interior, but damage and casualties have been minimal.

The Shiite and pro-Iranian group began firing rockets into Israel on October 8, 2023 in support of an attack on Israeli territory by the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas (previous day).

More than 2,100 Lebanese, including Hezbollah fighters, civilians and medical workers, have been killed by Israeli strikes since last year, two-thirds of them in recent weeks.

29 civilians and 39 Israeli soldiers have been killed by Hezbollah attacks since October 2023, when Israel launched its ground offensive in northern Israel and southern Lebanon.
