Don’t buy the iPhone SE (2022) now; iPhone SE 4 comes with a modern design in 2024 to bring an end to the mid-range reign of Google and Samsung
The new iPhone SE is expected to appear in the spring of 2024; To look and function like iPhone 14.
Before we get into the hot mid-range phone market, it’s worth noting that the future of the iPhone SE 4 has been uncertain for some time (in a way, it still is)…
Now, a supply chain analyst Joined by the folks from The Elec, Ming-Chi Kuo tells us that the iPhone SE 4 is very live and is due for a spring 2024 release! While this is in line with my personal expectations and Apple’s biannual release schedule for the iPhone SE model, there is a slight plot twist…
Although “Apple’s logic” points to the iPhone SE 4 much like the iPhone XR, Cupertino might be a little generous this time around, as Kuo and The Elec tell us to expect what is essentially iPhone 14. This means (again, according to recent reports) that the iPhone SE 4 should come with:
- iPhone 14 design – with notch, Face ID
- 6.1-inch OLED display with 60Hz refresh rate
- A16 Bionic chip (expectedly to power the iPhone 15), 4-6GB of RAM, 64GB of base storage (unless Apple is very generous and offers 128GB for the same price)
- USB-C charging port (debuted on iPhone 15) with USB 2.0 charging/data speeds
The $750 iPhone XR from 2018 is considered one of the most “affordable” iPhones ever. Apple is now expected to take the 6.1-inch model for another spin – this time with a lower price and better feature set. Still, the iPhone SE (2022) – iPhone SE (2024) upgrade might be one of the most important model upgrades in smartphone history.
iPhone SE 4 – The camera and price of Apple’s mid-range 2024 competitor could determine how it stacks up against the best mid-range phones from Samsung and Google (but also the iPhone 15)
Let’s say the iPhone SE 4 is basically the iPhone 14 but with only one camera on the back? are you with us
If Kuo and The Elec’s reports (both sources are fairly reliable) are published, the only two big questions about the new iPhone SE 4 that still need to be answered are the camera stance and the phone’s price.
On the issue of cameras, it’s pretty safe to assume that the iPhone SE will inherit exactly the same Face ID system as the iPhone 14, including a 12MP selfie camera, which takes very good photos and class-leading 4K videos. However, when it comes to the rear camera system, predicting what Apple will do gets a little trickier.
On the other hand, Apple could choose to give only the iPhone SE 4 One the rear camera (like any other iPhone SE to date), and cut production costs that way. Moreover, the iPhone SE 4 with only one rear camera would make it a much easier sell iPhone 15, which is not only expected to feature dual rear cameras, but also 2x optical quality zoom, thanks to a 48-megapixel camera.
Regardless, the primary camera on the iPhone SE 4 will almost certainly be a 12MP sensor and not the 48MP camera found on this year’s iPhone 14 Pro. What’s hard to say is exactly which 12MP sensor Apple will use. For example, the iPhone SE (2022) uses the ultra-dated 12MP sensor of the iPhone 8, but combines it with newer, more advanced image processing (from the iPhone 13).
Even if it had a higher price tag, the 2024 iPhone SE 4 could easily challenge the upcoming Pixel 7a, Galaxy A55, and Pixel 8 phones.
2024 is 2024. And as far as 2023 is concerned, I still expect the upcoming Pixel 7a to be the best value phone of the year.

To reiterate, according to leaks and rumors, next year’s iPhone SE 4 should be essentially the iPhone 14.
Worldwide iPhone prices have seen huge hikes, and Apple is expected to raise the prices of the upcoming iPhone 15 series as well. This suggests that what could be $400-450 for the iPhone SE 4, could cost at least $500 in the US and possibly closer to €700 in places like Europe.
Some of the affordable but great value Android phones we expected to see before the 2024 iPhone SE 4 release are:
- Google Pixel 7a
- Google Pixel 8
- Samsung Galaxy A33
With prices expected to range between $450 and $650, current and new Android mid-range phones may not be the obvious choice for those who want the most affordable phone on the market, running iOS (in other words, an iPhone). Of course, your operating system preference will play a huge role in this decision above anything else, which is why I’m focusing here on iOS.
The iPhone SE 4 will also challenge Apple’s flagship iPhone 15, which may not be the best value option for Apple users.
Going back to the beginning of the story, yes – Apple’s idea of a mid-range iPhone is a little different than Android’s…
While Samsung and Google are trying to give you as much as possible for less Multiple cameras, big batteries, and high refresh rate displays Apple’s way of making an affordable phone is to recycle an old design while throwing in the most powerful chip on the market to go with the throwback look. And who is to say what is the right/wrong approach here?
If sales are any indication, Apple is, in fact, on the right track. Of course, it would be almost impossible for me to recommend Present iPhone SE over a phone like the Pixel 6a, but try telling that to the millions of people who bought the old-looking iPhone SE last year!
According to Counterpoint, the iPhone SE 2022 was the fifth best-selling phone in the world last August.
Sure, having a 120Hz display is nice, and Android phones are more likely to give you more storage and an extra camera (sometimes useful), but Apple’s unparalleled A16 Bionic chip and a promise of five or more years of timely software updates at $500 dollar? This offer can be hard to beat if you don’t mind iOS.
