Amazon confirmed the halt to construction of its second headquarters, dubbed HQ2, in Virginia, to CNBC.
John Schwettler, Amazon’s head of real estate, said in a statement that the company is pushing toward construction of PenPlace, the second phase of its sprawling campus in Northern Virginia. The first phase of the campus, known as Metropolitan Park, is expected to open on time next June and be occupied by 8,000 employees.
“We are always evaluating space plans to ensure they fit the needs of our business and to create a great employee experience, and since the Met Park will have space to accommodate more than 14,000 employees, we decided to change the positioning of PenPlace (the second phase of Headquarters 2) out a bit,” Schweetler said in a statement. “Our second home has always been a multi-year project, and we remain committed to Arlington, Virginia, and the greater metropolitan area.”
The news was first reported by bloomberg.
PenPlace includes three 22-story office buildings, over 100,000 square feet of retail space, and a 350-foot tower called “The Helix”.
Amazon chose Arlington as its HQ2 location, as well as the Long Island City neighborhood of Queens, New York, as part of an exhausting and closely watched search for a second headquarters that began in 2017. The company announced in 2019 that it would halt plans to build its new headquarters in New York after it faced opposition from Local activists and city council leaders.
