Reports say that strong winds and high waves caused water to splash on the deck, disrupting its electrical system. With the ship running low on power, sailors were unable to pump water out of the ship, causing it to list hard and then sink, according to the Associated Press.

Sukhothai was commissioned in 1987, had a length of 252 feet and a water displacement of 959 tons. The Thai authorities plan to salvage what they can from the ship after the rescue efforts are completed.
