Ukraine and Russia have completely different balance sheets in terms of casualties. On the Ukrainian side, the deaths of nine thousand invaders are indicated. On the Russian side, the deaths of nearly 500 native soldiers were acknowledged, but this was different from the deaths of 2,870 Ukrainian soldiers and “nationalists”. The UN has already confirmed the deaths of 249 civilians.
In the first week of the conflict, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights confirmed that 249 civilians had been killed. According to the same source, since February 24, 553 civilians have been injured. In written testimony, the UN explained that, as of Wednesday, “most of the civilian casualties” were “caused by the use of high-impact explosives, including heavy artillery and rocket-propelled grenades and air and missile strikes.”
“These are the only casualties we can confirm and the actual balance will be high,” the High Commissioner said.
On Wednesday, the Ukrainian state emergency services released a statement saying “more than 2,000 civilians have died, not counting our bodyguards.” However, the publication will eventually be removed from the official pages. The state agency explained that this was only an “estimate” because “the number of people in the rubble and the fire is uncertain. The exact number is not known.”
9,000 Russians have died in Ukraine, but Russia admits only 498
As of this Thursday morning, the Ukrainian government had estimated that the Russians had already killed 9,000 soldiers, far more than the other parties claimed. The previous day, during a television report, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zhelensky had already mentioned the six thousand Russian soldiers killed since the beginning of the invasion.
On Wednesday evening, the Russian Defense Ministry took the first “special military action” in Ukraine. According to his calculations, 498 Russian soldiers were killed and 1597 wounded in the invasion of the neighboring country. As for the casualties on the opposite side, the Russians point out that 2870 Ukrainian soldiers and “nationalists” were killed and about 3700 wounded.
