Spanish MEP forced to take off ‘kefie’ in European Parliament

The MEP and former Spanish Equality Minister Irene Montero had to remove the ‘keffiyeh’ scarf associated with the Palestinian struggle that she wore to address the European Parliament.

Irene Montero, married to former MEP and founder of Podemos, Pablo Iglesias, insisted. “If Europe stops buying and selling weapons to the genocidals, allows arms smuggling and breaks trade ties, Israel will not be able to amass more than 43,000 dead in Gaza and 1,000 more in Lebanon.”.

“An attack on a United Nations peacekeeping mission is an act of war by Israel against European countries,” he added. “If they call genocide genocide, stop participating in the Zionist propaganda that Israel has the right to defend itself, the terrorist state of Israel must stop demolishing schools, hospitals, refugee camps. Stop bombing. Lebanon is burning people alive with white phosphorus and hospitals.”He insisted that these “barbarities are broadcast live”, but Europe “ignores them”.

The war in the Gaza Strip began on October 7, 2023, when a Hamas attack killed around 1,200 people on Israeli soil, of which another 251 were taken hostage.
