Italian prosecutors have opened a homicide investigation into the sinking of a luxury yacht off the coast of Sicily, they revealed at a conference this Saturday. The tragedy in the Mediterranean Sea led to the death of seven people.
Officials led by Ambrogio Cardozio elaborated that the investigation was not focused on a specific person.
Hannah Lynch, 18, was the last casualty to be found following the drowning of her father, tycoon Mike Lynch.
The sinking puzzled many experts. The boat’s builder raised some doubts, arguing that the structure was “unsinkable”.
Fifteen of the 22 people on board survived the disaster, including Lynch’s wife. The boat captain and other survivors were questioned about the sinking, but none could explain what had happened.
Another prosecutor explained at the same conference that the captain was “very cooperative” in his statements. Removing the boat from the sea will be essential for prosecutors to accurately determine the cause of the accident.
However, this operation is expensive, time-consuming and complicated. “The owners of the boat promised to cooperate, in the interest of recovering it,” Cardozio said, adding that those targeted were not legally obliged to stay in Italy.
