A group of inmates at a Russian prison in Volgograd took control of the facility and took several hostages, including prison guards, state agency RIA Novosti reported. The jail has a capacity of 1,229 inmates.

At least one prison guard was killed, according to Russian emergency services. However, images shared on social media, whose authenticity could not be verified, showed a group of inmates armed with knives standing over the bodies of at least four prison guards, while holding one of the visibly injured police officers.

“During the meeting of the IK-19 disciplinary commission in the Volgograd region, several prisoners were taken hostage,” a Russian prison service source told the agency.

Russian officials say at least three prisoners were involved in the incident.

According to Russian press, inmates attacked prison guards with knives while a group of employees from the Federal Penitentiary Service inspected the facilities.

“Currently, steps are being taken to free the hostages,” the prison service source added to the Russian newspaper.
