Gwyneth Paltrow Ski Experience Updates: Goop Founder Goes to Court for Skating Collision Lawsuit in Park City, Utah

Terry Sanderson’s attorney, Lawrence Buehler, addressed the jurors during opening arguments Tuesday.

Buehler said his client was seriously injured as a result of a collision with Gwyneth Paltrow at Deer Valley Resort in 2016.

“Sometimes it’s just a bump or a bruise, sometimes it’s a scary or a close call, but sometimes it’s worse. Sometimes it’s a broken bone or a concussion or permanent brain damage and that’s what happened here.”

Ms. Paltrow, who has been skiing since she was three years old, has been to Deer Valley no fewer than six times, according to the defense. On the day of the accident, Ms. Paltrow was reportedly visiting the resort with her family and four ski instructors.

During opening arguments, attorneys for Terry Sanderson said that Gwyneth Paltrow’s “conscious disregard for everyone else skating” caused his client serious injuries, including four broken ribs and permanent damage.

“All skiers know that when they’re skiing down the mountain, it’s their responsibility to pay attention, to look down, and to give right-of-way to the skiers below,” Mr. Sanderson’s attorney said.

“Because the skiers below them can’t see behind them as they turn left and right to control their speed, especially when there are a lot of people down the mountain, it is the responsibility of the downhill skiers to concede the right-of-way to the skiers below.”

Gwyneth Paltrow is facing a lawsuit from a man who accused her of getting into him in a “hit-and-run skiing accident” seven years ago.

The accident occurred on the slopes of Mount Flagstaff, part of Deer Valley Resort near Park City, Utah, on February 26, 2016 when Paltrow and retired ophthalmologist Dr. Terry Sanderson collided on a beginner’s course known as the Bandana Run.

After a short break following the rulings on the preliminary motions, Judge Kent Holmberg ordered the jury to be brought into the courtroom.

In court filings, Paltrow’s attorneys deny Sanderson’s allegations and claim that he was the one who collided with her — a collision in which she took a “complete blow to her body.” Her counterclaim claims that members of Paltrow’s group checked on Sanderson, who assured them he was fine. He questions his motives and claims of injury, noting that prior to the accident, he had 15 documented medical conditions.

He demanded that Mrs. Paltrow pay him millions. If she does not pay, she will face negative publicity resulting from his allegations,” her lawyers wrote in a 2019 court filing.

Paltrow is being sued by retired ophthalmologist Terry Sanders, who claims she collided with him during a skiing accident in 2016. Mr. Sanderson claims Ms. Paltrow was responsible for the accident, which left him with “emotional distress, brain injury, and a lack of fun.” for life.”

The Oscar-winning actress claimed it was Sanderson who bumped into her.

After his initial lawsuit seeking $3.1 million was dropped, Mr. Sanderson amended the complaint and is now seeking $300,000. Paltrow — the Oscar-winning actress best known for her roles in Marvel’s “Shakespeare in Love” and “Iron Man” — sued, seeking attorneys’ fees and $1 in damages.

Paltrow replies that he was indeed the culprit in the collision, exaggerates his injuries, and tries to exploit her fame and fortune. In addition to her acting career, she is also the founder and CEO of high-end health company goop.

Paltrow seeks a moral victory to clear her name in seeking only $1 in damages plus legal fees.
