In the article, Drs Jeffrey Sturek and Alexandra Cottle, professors at the University of Virginia in the US, explain how Covid-19 can affect breathing in the long term. According to experts, some of the symptoms associated with prolonged Covid-19 may be triggered by lung damage.

Sturek and Caudl point out that gas exchange takes place in more than 20 segments from the trachea to the pulmonary alveoli, tiny air sacs in contact with blood capillaries. Keeping ventilation and circulatory processes in harmony is critical to basic lung function and requires a lot of coordination. According to doctors, damage to the respiratory tract can cause breathing difficulties in patients.

Other potential contributors to long-term Covid symptoms include airflow obstruction and restriction of the lungs. The first condition prevents air from leaving the organs after complete expiration, increasing the effort required to breathe. Two common causes are chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and asthma, in which the airways become narrowed.
